A legacy is a gift you leave through your will. You decide who benefits — family, friends and good causes such as LEJO — and which part of your estate they receive. If you have children or a partner, they are entitled to a reserved share; the freely disposable part you can leave to whomever you wish.
General legacy
You leave your entire estate to one or more beneficiaries.
Legacy under general title
You leave a portion or category — for example half of your estate or all of your movable assets.
Specific legacy
You leave a specific asset or amount — for example a sum of money, a home or a valuable item.
Tax-friendly in Flanders
If you are a Flemish resident for tax purposes, good causes such as LEJO have paid 0% inheritance tax on a legacy since 1 July 2021. That means your full gift reaches young people, with nothing lost to tax. In Brussels and Wallonia a reduced rate of 7% applies.
Tax rules differ by region and can change. Always consult your notary for your personal situation.
